Abstract: We herein report two incidents of Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus) trawling bycatch in the western Mediterranean, in May 2011. Both incidents, which involved single individuals, took place during the course of an experimental trawling cruise across the Mediterranean Iberian shelf, and coincided with operations when high numbers of shearwaters were present in relatively shallow waters. These incidents provide for the first time evidence of trawling bycatch for this Critically Endangered seabird. Although trawling bycatch events appear to be rare, they could be of concern under particular conditions, and further research is needed to assess the relevance of this threat.

Monitoring of yellow-legged gulls in the Basque Country: going up!

11 November 2009

Since 1982, yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis lusitanicus) populations have shown a dramatic increase in the Basque Country, most likely in response to food availability in rubbish dumps and fisheries discards.

Abstract: Our aim was to analyse the changes in the distribution and size of Basque yellow-legged gull population (N Iberia) between the decades of 1980 and 2000 (hereafter: 80's, 90's and 00's). Counts of adult breeding pairs were done periodically between these decades (1982-2007), but since not all colonies were censed within each counting year, we calculated both the mean and maximum number of bp per colony and decade. Number of colonies increased from 12 in 80's to 28 (probably 29) in 00's, with most colonies being found in Bizkaia. Only four out of the 29 colonies were in urban areas of Bizkaia. Overall, the population was registered to increase from a mean of 1728 adult pairs (ranges: 1574-1851) in 80's to 4246 (2951-5557) in 00's. Rate of population growth decreased during this period, with the mean rate for the 00's being close to zero. The increase detected from 90's to 00's was mainly due to the largest new colonies appeared during the 90's and 00's and with still high rates of population growth. Finally, it is likely that such a population increase of Basque colonias is linked with the high availability of food from dump and fish discards.

Autores: Juan Arizaga, Aitor Galarza, Alfredo Herrero, Jon Hidalgo, Asier Aldalur
E-mail: juan.arizaga [at] ifv.terramare.de
